Promoting Fundamental British Values

Our Vision

We are committed to providing a high quality educational provision for all our pupils which will enable them to reach their full potential and attain the levels of knowledge, understanding and skills that society demands for their future lives.

High quality education at Aspin Primary Academy is achieved by:

 

  • positive, caring and clearly focused leadership from the senior leadership team
  • the whole staff team having high expectations of our children’s social, behavioural and academic performance

We continually strive to achieve the school’s aims through the formal curriculum and through all the other experiences offered to our children.  High quality education raises the children’s standards of attainment, enabling them to:

 

  • develop and deepen their knowledge and understanding of English and Maths which will provide the foundation for all learning
  • develop social skills that encourage agreeable interactions between their peers as well as adults
  • treat everyone in an equal manner, irrespective of gender, race, class or disability
  • develop personal and moral values that are respectful of others, leading to their appreciation and toleration of other religions and other ways of life
  • learn in a safe and secure environment, in keeping with Health and Safety Regulations that are in the interests of all whom work in the schoo

Our Values and Seeds of Success

We aim in everything we do to ensure that the ‘Seeds of Success’ of Focus, Effort, Responsibility, Courage, Ambition and Enthusiasm are both explicit and implicit in all that we do.  These key values enable our children to perform well both academically and socially, and progress exceptionally well whatever their starting point.

We value the diversity and differences of all our pupils and celebrate this through our culture, ethos, school vision and values, SMSC developments and the respectful relationships which we promote. We are committed to actively promoting British values at Aspin Park to ensure that our young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

Our pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is "right" and "wrong", all people living in England are subject to its law.

Commitment and celebration of our diversity makes us collectively stronger, tolerant and respectful to all. This engenders a climate within which pupils feel safe and secure and facilitates the fulfilment of potential. Pupil voice plays an integral part in driving the school forward and school rules at different levels are seen as the foundation upon which this can be achieved.

The following outlines a selection of activities that are evidence of our commitment to British values:

  • An elected School Council
  • An elected Eco Council
  • A strong pupil voice.
  • Visits from our local MP (Andrew Jones) and councillors
  • Year 6 prefects
  • Playtime ‘buddies’
  • A broad and balanced curriculum that teaches elements of democracy, civic responsibility, rules and laws, the monarchy, equality, values and virtues, environmental awareness and understanding of other faiths
  • Visits to different places of worship
  • Visitors from other faiths
  • Positive behaviour policy which encourages tolerance and mutual respect
  • Assemblies which celebrate and acknowledge British Values

Our children are giving opportunities and experiences, which enable them to understand what it means to live in modern Britain. These include taking part in traditional British activities such as national fundraising days (eg: Children in Need and Red Nose Day), commemorating Remembrance Day, taking part in sports day, celebrating Bonfire night etc. It includes developing children's understanding of traditional British values such as democracy through the work of the School Council and Eco Council whose members are voted for by the children in the style of a general election. Ideas and events are planned and discussed with a chance for debate and putting forward points of view.

Children are given responsibility to run their own clubs and lead other children in games and activities so that they are fully involved in all aspects of school life. For instance, children from Years 2 -6 are invited to become playtime buddies and help to promote our core values. We expect all our children to be good role models for each other, which is encouraged through high expectations of behaviour. Our curriculum teaches our children what it means to be British in today's society through PSHCE and other subjects.

On a more general level, the school undertakes daily assemblies which highlight British Values alongside the school ‘seeds for success’. These are also taught within formal PSHCE and RE lessons and on an informal nature throughout the school days.
